Centers of Excellence Requirements


  1. The facility has an identified multidisciplinary team for tracheostomy care and Passy-Muir Valve application, including physicians (e.g. intensivists, pulmonologist, otolaryngologist, pediatrician, neonatologist) nurse practitioner, nurses, respiratory therapists, speech-language pathologists, and other clinical staff as appropriate.
  2. If the facility has ventilator patients, there is utilization of the Passy-Muir valve in-line with the ventilator.
  3. The facility has written policies and procedures regarding Passy-Muir Valve application that are reviewed by Passy-Muir Clinical Specialists.
  4. The clinicians of the facility have participated in Passy-Muir educational opportunities (e.g. inservice, webinars, self-study CEUs, etc.) and have an ongoing method of staff education and training regarding the assessment and application of the valve (e.g. yearly competency, training checklist, supervised placements on mannequins and patients, inservice, webinar, etc.)
  5. The facility has submitted a video of an assessment and application of the Passy-Muir Valve with a patient (including ventilator application if facility services these patients). The video is reviewed by Passy-Muir Clinical Specialists.
  6. The facility has received an on-site visit from a Passy-Muir Clinical Specialist and demonstrates competency in assessment and application of the Passy-Muir Valve on spontaneously breathing and ventilated patients.

Additional criteria (not required but strongly recommended):

  1. Publications in peer-reviewed journals regarding research or clinical methods involving the Passy-Muir Valve
  2. Media coverage or recognition in any professional or mainstream outlets regarding facility and/or program (e.g. professional magazines and publications, newsletters, local papers, corporate media outlets)
  3. Presentations/Posters at healthcare conferences or society meetings regarding use of the Passy-Muir Valve
  4. Objective measures and/or documentation of improved outcomes. Examples include:
  • weaning rates
  • decannulation rates
  • length of stay
  • oral feeding/swallowing measures
  • aspiration rates
  • communication measures
  • mobility/physical
