Erasmo was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome on May 5th, 2010. Guillain-Barré syndrome is an inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nerves outside the brain and spinal cord (GBS/CIPD Foundation). He arrived at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital May 25th in an extremely debilitated and weak condition. The Passy-Muir® Valve was placed in his ventilator tubing, allowing him to speak and communicate with his nurses. He also started intensive swallowing retraining with use of the valve. Following his rehabilitation he was discharged from Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital but returned for a visit walking, talking and living life to the fullest!
